Silent Man

Description

This came from a time when I worked for the company, and the new management was firing all the outspoken men.

One man would brag about how he always worked on his Mustang car, but I could see how bothered he was by the layoffs.

 

Silent Man

This is my 1968 Ford Mustang,
Same as Steve Mcqueen drove in Bullitt.

I rebuilt it myself,
all by hand.
It is my secret,
weekend lover.

The engine has sensors
that monitor it all,
as I drive through the hills
looking for something to fix.

little white crosses passing,
flowers wilting round their base.
The last bend reached,
again I guess,

They sacked Brian today.
Thirty three years on the job,
one little mistake and now he’s gone.

A few months ago
they sacked Matt the same way.
Marched him through the staff room like a criminal.

I wanted to say something
but you can’t.
For if you want to survive
then you’ve got to learn somehow
to find the courage to be

There are so many curves
on this mountain road,
and so many of them are blind.

But my car eats them all
for there is nothing wrong ,
i guess today is the day
she no longer needs me.

I’ve been wanting to call Brian ,
Look Mate, it’s not like I don’t care,
But what can I,
as one man do,
Surely you understand?
Things are not like they were before,
To try and keep your job, now,
somehow you have to learn to be
Just another Silent man.

This land is changing.
